Case Study Heading

Heading 2

Overview

A real estate development firm required a safe and efficient solution to address the operational challenges at their facility’s loading dock. The existing setup featured a 39" floor height—significantly below the 48" standard trailer height—causing a steep and hazardous slope for loading and unloading materials. Complicating the matter further, a parking garage beneath the dock eliminated the option of excavating the existing pit.

Eton Loading Dock Services was contracted to design and implement a creative, cost-effective solution that eliminated the slope hazard, ensured worker safety, and improved operational efficiency.

Problem

The facility faced multiple operational challenges stemming from a 9-inch height difference between the dock (39") and standard trailer floors (48"), creating a steep and hazardous slope. Excavation to adjust the dock height was not an option due to the presence of a parking garage beneath the loading area, limiting structural modifications. This slope not only posed significant safety risks to personnel and equipment but also resulted in slower, less efficient material handling processes, impacting overall productivity.

The Solution

Eton Loading Dock Services proposed and successfully installed a custom 6' x 12' hydraulic dock leveler, extending beyond the existing 6' x 8' pit via a newly fabricated 4-foot freestanding steel platform. This turnkey solution included:

  • Hydraulic Dock Leveler (6’ x 12’):
Designed for reliable, smooth, and low-effort operation to bridge the gap safely.

  • Freestanding Platform Extension (4’):
A robust steel frame structure built to eliminate the slope issue without requiring any excavation.

  • Safety Enhancements:
Man-height guard rails around the extension platform
Integrated run-off guards to prevent forklifts from overshooting the dock
Reduced slope for safer, more ergonomic material handling

The Result

  • Zero Downtime: Installation was completed in two days with no disruption to operations.

  • Enhanced Safety: The new system significantly reduced fall risks and material-handling hazards.

  • Increased Efficiency: Forklift operators now load and unload with ease and speed, resulting in faster turnaround times.

  • High Satisfaction: The client expressed high satisfaction with the outcome, praising the quality, craftsmanship, and professionalism of the ELDS team.
